Hair transplant feasibility, what is Anagen Effluvium?

Anagen Effluvium, sometimes called chemotherapy-induced alopecia, is the formation of hair loss from chemotherapy. Chemotherapy treats cancer by attacking and eliminating rapidly growing cancer cells.

In addition, chemotherapy may also chastise the cells of hair follicles as collateral damage due to its tendency to attack any rapidly growing cell in the body, in which hair is included.

This hair loss is not exactly instant, but after a few weeks, it will be consistent.

Hair transplant feasibility, what causes Anagen Effluvium?

As hair follicle cells are some of the fastest-growing cells in the body, they are, consequently, susceptible to the harmful effects of chemotherapy, allowing Anagen Effluvium to arise.

What are the Anagen Effluvium symptoms?

Anagen Effluvium is a secondary condition developed due to the effects of chemotherapy. Therefore anagen effluvium specifically does not have any other side effects aside from hair loss.

Can hair transplants treat Anagen Effluvium?

Hair transplants, alongside other hair restoration methods, are unnecessary to treat anagen effluvium as hair often grows back when the chemotherapy stops.

Hair transplant FAQ's

What would a hair transplant cost in London?

For more minor procedures, it will cost around 5000 GBP. More extensive procedures can cost upwards of 8500+ GBP.

How long does hair loss treatment last?

The procedure will last around four to ten hours, depending on how many hairs need to be grafted. Your unique circumstances will decide the number of grafts required. This will be discussed during your consultation.

What are the chances of hair growth being successful?

Though not guaranteed, the chances for success are incredibly high. Medical studies indicate that 85-95% of hair grafts survive after FUE. The more grafts that survive, the more successful the procedure is considered. However, there is no single hair treatment with guaranteed results.

Are Hair Implants painful?

Because a local anaesthetic is being used at the target location, you will feel no pain during the procedure. However, you could feel discomfort for a few days after the procedure. This could mean your surgeon will prescribe you pain medication.
Luckily, Our procedure is much less painful when compared to FUT.

Are Hair transplant results worth it?

Studies have shown a close link between self-confidence and hair loss. Hair transplants may be the only way to treat alopecia for many men and even some women.

Who will benefit from having a Hair transplant?

The majority of patients who qualify for Hair transplants are men aged between thirty and fifty who are experiencing hair thinning, regression of hairline, or even bald spots. Our typical patients have progressed above class three on the Norwood Scale but can range between two to five. If you have noticed hair loss for at least five years, you may also be a good candidate for hair transplant surgery.

What to do if you have problems after your Hair treatment?

Rest assured, all of our hair transplants come with an aftercare package. This package includes return or emergency visits in case any immediate complications arise. If you feel you have any issues after the procedure, you should contact your physician as soon as possible. Your physician will provide all of our contact details and general information at your consultation.

How long does it take to recover from Hair implants?

Since we are using ARTAS, the recovery time in patients is much higher when compared to legacy procedures. You can return to work after 48hours, allowing the anaesthetic to wear off completely. However, It is worth noting that your scalp may feel tender and scabbed for the first two weeks following the procedure.

What are the risks of a Hairline transplant?

The most common risks apply to all surgical procedures. These would be infections or an allergic reaction to the anaesthesia.

What is the Long term outlook for Hairline surgery?

For most people, the full effect of the procedure may not appear until eight to twelve months or even longer. It is essential to keep this waiting time in mind.

What is the best age to do a Hair transplant for men?

The most common age for hair transplants is between 30 and 50. Typically younger patients may not see the extent of their hair loss as their alopecia has not yet fully developed. 50+ year-olds may also be able to qualify for the treatment, depending on whether they have enough hair to graft from the back of the scalp. If you are unsure if you are eligible for a hair transplant, please book your consultation now.

Where will my Hair restoration take place?

The treatment will occur in one of our London clinics by our surgeon and his team. Both the clinic and our medical team will make sure to follow all the UK safety standards to perform surgical treatments.

Is the transplanted Hair permanent?

The hair extracted from the donor area is not affected by DHT (Dihydrotestosterone) and is prone to live longer than any other hair on the human body. Therefore, the grafted hairs will live in the new area for an extended timeframe.

Will I need more Hair surgery in the future?

The Physician can recommend some preventative medications designed to extend the life cycle of your hair. However, due to the natural ageing process, you may continue to lose your hair over time and therefore, you might need a second procedure to add coverage.

When will I see my results post Hair transplant?

The initial growth of the implanted hair follicles will begin around three or four months after your procedure.

Will the transplanted Hair look different to my existing hair?

The transplanted grafts will develop in their natural growth process.

Will I be awake for Hair transplant surgery?

Your surgeon may administer a light oral sedative to help you relax on the day of your procedure. However, since your doctor will only issue a local anaesthetic to your nape, you will be able to remain awake throughout the procedure.

How long does the Hair transplant procedure take?

The duration of the procedure may vary depending on the number of grafts. However, most procedures usually take six to eight hours.

Do I need someone to drive me home after my hair transplant?

As the procedure may take a full day and medications will be given, it is recommended that you arrange transportation for your procedure.

How much time off work do I need to take after a hair transplant?

It is recommended that you take three to five days off to recover after the procedure. However, some patients can return to work in one to three days.

Will people be able to tell that I had a Hair transplant?

For the first three days, your scalp may look slightly red. You may wear a loosely fitted baseball cap to cover the treatment area.

How soon after my Hair transplant will my scars and inflammation disappear?

Scabbing takes place in about 3-5 days, and they should start clearing up in about seven days.

What are the side effects of Hair transplants?

Immediate side effects:

Pain - Though usually minor, It is common to feel some pain or discomfort following your hair transplant surgery. In most patients, the pain lasts up to five days. Generally, over-the-counter painkillers like paracetamol should help suppress this pain.

Swelling - Inflammation around your head, eyes and cheeks is widespread in patients following a hair transplant.

Itchiness - Itchiness may be one of the most frustrating hairline transplant side effects. However, it is paramount for your hair surgery's success that you entirely refrain from itching your scalp. The transplanted hair follicles remain fragile for the first week or so, meaning they can easily be relocated or killed off with any physical stress to your scalp. Fortunately, if your scalp is itching, it is an excellent sign that your head is healing correctly.

Scabbing - Like itchiness, scabbing also lasts for around ten to fourteen days after hair restoration surgery.

Infection - Infection after a hairline surgery is incredibly uncommon. The occurrence of infection is heavily dictated by the practices of your chosen hair clinic.

Common symptoms of infection are as follows: noticeably increased pain, the creation and discharge of pus from your scalp.

Reaction to anaesthetic - Finally, reactions are certainly the most dangerous of all immediate side effects with hair plugs and surgical procedures in general. Measures to avoid all risks associated with anaesthetic reactions should be discussed and practised in the consultation(s) leading to your hair transplant surgery. The symptoms following a reaction vary between patients but include a rash, hives, severe itchiness, swelling, drop in blood pressure, shortness of breath, coughing, etc. Fortunately, reacting to anaesthesia is extremely rare and largely preventable.

Subsequent side effects:

Nerve damage - Numbness around the scalp can occur following hair transplant surgery. The numbness stems from anaesthesia reaching the nerves on your head. Though most patients only feel numb for a few days following the surgery, few have reported numbness lasting a few weeks or even a few months. Like infections, the chances of having long term numbness are low, but it is ultimately the doctor's responsibility to administer the anaesthetic correctly.

Scarring - Though the scar severity of FUT hair transplants trumps FUE, both do leave scars. Fortunately, after a few weeks (based on the extraction quality of the surgery), scars from robotic FUE hair transplants become virtually undetectable. With FUT, a linear scar at the nape of your scalp will be permanent.

Hair loss may reoccur - The donor area at the nape of the scalp is DHT (Dihydrotestosterone) resistant. This resistance allows the transplanted hair to be permanent. However, the hair surrounding your transplant is still subject to the natural ageing process. Due to this, some patients decide to have a second set of hair implants around ten years after the first.

Will I have any scars after a Hair transplant?

There are no visible linear scars after surgery. However, you will have little micro scars.

How long after a Hair transplant does the pain last?

Pain is very minimal or non-existent to most. However, a light OTC (over-the-counter-) pain medication is normally used for the first two days after the procedure.

Will there be a lot of swelling after a Hair transplant?

Swelling may vary depending on the treated area. Please carefully follow the post-op instructions directed by the Physician.

When can you wash your Hair after a Hair transplant?

The Physician will inform you when washing hair is permissible during your consultation.

Do you have to take medications to maintain your hair after a hair transplant?

Preventative medications are optional, and the Physician will discuss your options to see what's best for you.

What is aftercare like for hair transplants?

Aftercare is included in your treatment package, meaning follow-up appointments are common to track your recovery. Our surgeons can treat any immediate complications with no additional charge. In other words, surgery is simply the most reliable treatment if you are looking for a permanent solution.
